Top start-ups to watch in South Africa

Category Commercial and Industrial News

South Africa is currently home to various exciting innovations and tech start-ups that are promising to revolutionise their respective industries. With our eye always on the future, 3Cube Property Solutions takes a look at a few of the top tech companies in South Africa which are pushing the boundaries of what is possible - in every industry from events and education to water purification.

Taking the events industry by storm

A company called Howler is revolutionising the events industry by using technology to create an efficient organising platform. With impressive technology including RFID cashless solutions at events, Howler is the first company to bring consolidated ticketing, vendor management and streaming into one platform. A great example of the way Howler has used technology to enhance the experience of event-goers emerged for the first time at Rage 2016. Each attendee was issued with a wristband that served as a virtual wallet - and also contained emergency contact details. This meant that vendors - as cash businesses - waited only three days - as opposed to a number of weeks - to see the money they earned at Rage land in their accounts.

Combining education and technology

There is now a digital learning platform dedicated to teaching its users how to code - and due to the in-demand nature of these skills, Zaio is undoubtedly added to the list of start-ups to watch. People choose to learn coding for different reasons, and Zaio offers different teaching plans to help meet students meet different goals - from upgrading an existing career to getting a high-paid tech job. The value of Zaio's idea was confirmed in June 2019 and August 2020, when two funding rounds were completed, raising a total of $70 000. Zaio offers courses such as full-stack web development and front and back-end engineering, as well as an introduction to coding. According to Zaio's LinkedIn profile, the company "de-risks the hiring process with a work-ready graduate training program that addresses the core competency gap." On their website, they make the bold claim that graduates can get placed in guaranteed jobs through Zaio's partner companies. Any company providing those with no background in coding the chance to get ahead in this challenging field earns its place on the list of start-ups worth watching.

Taking training sessions onto remote platforms

Back in 2017 - long before COVID-19 and the age of Zoom calls - Kobus Louw founded Digemy, a company that helps training providers transform in-person training material into widely accessible digital workshops. Their mission is to teach your team everything they need to know - and if the training material doesn't exist, they will create it for you. If you do have existing training material, the Digemy team will tailor it with graphics, animation and video. Digemy provides a unique training platform that resembles a game, improving knowledge retention. This gamification is based on the strategy of optimising your most valuable resource - your people. Thanks to the platform's course creation system, you can create an array of training tools from polls and quizzes to courses and assessments. Digemy has created a learning platform that's less about pass rates and more about real mastery - and that earns them a space on our list of start-ups to watch.

Bringing safe drinking water home to 5 million people by 2025

Sustainability and access to drinking water are two of the most significant issues facing South Africa today. Enter Kusini Water, founded by Murendeni Mafuno. Kusini is tackling the problem by creating bespoke water purification and distribution systems using nanotechnology and macadamia nut shells. Their mission is to reverse the horrifying statistics about how many South Africans have no access to fresh water. They are working towards achieving their goal with the help of water filtration and treatment systems equipped with IoT technology. Thanks to a deal recently made with the Vumela Fund, Kusini Water is expanding its operations into other parts of Africa.

Start-ups that make a difference have three things in common: they have all learnt valuable lessons, they all set about to solve a problem or streamline a process and they all require the right premises to facilitate their growth. If your start-up in Gauteng needs a home, get in touch with 3Cube Property Solutions. We'll find the commercial or industrial premises that are right for your business.
