Boksburg; An Industrial Powerhouse

Category Industrial News

Boksburg, situated in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality in Gauteng (formerly known as the East Rand), is a popular industrial node renowned for its large, well-equipped and modern warehouses and factories that attract national and international businesses. Just 20 minutes from the Johannesburg CBD, the city has developed an ideal property market for manufacturing, logistics and storage services - and it is pegged as one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the province.

Easy Commute

Road infrastructure in Boksburg is one of the main reasons businesses expand or relocate here - it is centrally positioned between the N12 and N17 highways, as well as other major routes including the R21, R23, R24, R29 and R555. This positioning means that businesses and employees are easily connected to places of employment and surrounding regions including Brakpan, Benoni, Germiston, Alberton, Johannesburg. Furthermore, road and air links connect Ekurhuleni to Durban, allowing easy access to the Durban Port. Being served by a series of freeways and highways has another advantage; it provides an easy commute to the OR Tambo International Airport, which is a quick 28-minute drive away (22,2 km) using the R21 route.

Besides road and air links, employees and businesses in Boksburg also benefit from the main metro line in the area, the Elandsfontein railway station, which connects the city to Soweto, Alexandra, Tembisa and Vosloorus.

A Closer Look at Industry

Spanning 162sqm and home to over 260 000 residents, Boksburg is home to an industrial sector which forms a vital component of Gauteng's economy. It contributes nearly a quarter of the province's output. Alongside other cities in the Ekurhuleni Municipality, Boksburg has earned the title of "Africa's Workshop", and its industrial sector plays an important role in creating employment for residents.

There are four main suburbs which form hubs of industrial activity in Boksburg, namely AnderboltJet Park, Boksburg East and Hughes. Here, you can find small, medium and large manufacturing and logistics businesses with many of the properties being found in modern and secure industrial parks with ample height to eaves, ample power and office elements. An example of a prime and modern warehouse can be found in Jet Park - it spans 660sqm and is positioned close to the R21 and N12 highways, neighbouring the Griffith Road on-ramp. It features three-phase power, one roller shutter door, 24-hour security, a loading bay, allocated parking, reception and boardroom areas, open-plan offices with a balcony, and a braai area with lake views.

Jet Park

Jet Park is one of the newer industrial parks in Boksburg. Its secure parameters, modern finishes, and ideal location have made it a popular destination for industrial tenants and buyers who require properties in line with international standards. The development consists of two neighbouring sites that span 4.5ha and 3.8ha respectively. The sites hold three prominent business complexes, namely Lakeview Business Park, Ventura Industrial Park and Northlake Industrial Park.

Some of the well-known businesses operating in Jet Park include:

- Supply Chain Solutions
- Imperial Retail Logistics
- RTT
- Spar
- DHL
- Sanitech

The Future of the Industrial Sector

The future of the industrial sector in Boksburg looks set for transformation due to the strategic role it plays in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. It is part of a multitude of development zones and governmental initiatives that will grow the sector in the long-term.

These include:

- The Maputo Corridor, which connects Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg and the West Rand to Maputo's deepwater port;

- Blue IQ Projects, which is a multi-billion rand initiative by the provincial government to invest in manufacturing, tourism, technology and transport;

- The OR Tambo International Airport Industrial Development Zone (IDZ), established to develop and operate the IDZ in Africa's biggest and busiest airport.
